SEASON SECOND ATTEMPT

Having received feedback on my last images for winter, I have decided to concentrate more on the branches and multiple exposure...

So here are my second outcomes...

In this image I used two images. The faded tree coming in the composition from the right has a small opacity. Trees without leaves invoke isolation. I like the fact electricity cables come across the image, it adds a slight divide. There is a contrast with man made and natural components.

The faded tree in this image acts as a pattern in the background. Again I like the cables that direct our eyes across the composition.

#

I think the more darker tree in this image has a little too many leaves on it, it takes it away from being winter like.

I have used a tree with berries on in the more faded exposure as they are closely connected to the season, it adds a different shape form to the multiple exposure.

I have cropped this image to make the branch that comes in from the centre on the right centred and dominant. The shape of this branch is really strong and quite creepy.

FEEDBACK

On Wednesday we got feedback for our starting images of our given season.

Here is what was said on the images...

In this left image I made it more blue/ green on Photoshop, I was told that I needed to limit this to make it look a little more realistic, and increase the contrast. I will therefore reverse this back again and compare.

In the image I have reversed the colour change and also cropped a bit of the left side, so that no blue sky is showing, as this diverts the image form being winter- like.

In this image the feedback I was given was that the sillhoette look was good, however my season was autumn so there are too many leaves still on the trees, I will reshoot similar images when there are less leaves in around a week. The whiteness of the sky this image runs well with the season of winter, as normally there are no clouds.

In this image I will crop the bottom of the image off, so that there is no green grass in the left hand corner, this diverts the image into being autumnal.

Here is the cropped image...

In this image, they said the whiteness around the evergreen branches look as if a layer has fallen on top, however this was only light coming from the right hand side.

I will create some more photographs soon that will have the feedback in mind...

WINTER FIRST IMAGES

In the following images I have tried to capture the isolation of tree branches at this time of the year. I have used some objects that are associated with winter as well , for example wellies. I have used different techniques which I will describe under each image.

In this image I photographed a fir tree, a tree closely associated with winter, to make it look more cold I changed the colour balance to make it more blue.

Multiple exposure using Photoshop...

In the following  images I have done multiple exposures, it acts a bit like a previous exposure experiment in the studio but you combine separate images together.

In this image I combined two images of tree branches taken upwards towards the sky, it has created a pattern effect.

On the fence it looks as if a small layer of snow has formed on it, however this isn't the case it is just the light shining onto it. On top of that image I added a smaller image of fir tree branches and holly.

In this image I have photographed wellies which are closely connected to the season, on top is an isolated tree trunk.

The way I have photographed these tree branches makes them look as if they are only silhouettes. There is some level of creepiness in the way the branches come in from the top.

I have combined two perspectives of an evergreen tree in this image, the most dominant exposure we can see is of the actual tree outside. The faded image that appears more at the back is a scaned image of one branch from the same tree.

Scanning to create photographs...

I have used my scanner to create an image of one fir tree branch. I have combined this image with images I have taken outside.

ASSIGNMENT 2 COLOUR AND SEASON

OVERVIEW...

In this assignment I am requested to look closer and considercolour within your everyday enviroment. I will consider the signficance of colour and its ability to purvey meaning. We were split into 3 seasons, I was given winter.

When I consider the season winter I think of ...

Coldness
Frailty
Death
Christmas
The passage of time
Whites
Snow
Isolation

I think as a starting point I will consider the idea of death. In the natural landscape an example of something coming to its end or 'dying' is trees, leaves fall off leaving frail branches isolated. I will be focusing on this idea.

As it is autumn the leaves are starting to fall off but not fully isolated, so I will capture this to start with then hopefully capture fully isolated branches in the next few weeks.

RESEARCH...

To help me with starting this assignment I have found the following photographers that photograph a simalar concept.

UTA BARTH

Uta Barth has used photography to play around with depth of field and focus as we can see in one of the images.
She also does quite a few photographs of frail isolated branches, which I want to cosider for my landscape photographs.

In this image there is 3 images linked together in a sequence of empty branches. When I see these images I consider emptiness and the end of autumn beginning of winter.

In these images she has used numorous canvas' of tree branches, in the first image she has blocked out one canvas with the colour yellow this may be done to have created a sort of mood she wanted the viewer to have. In the second she has used yellow again but turned the branches the colour.

In this image Barth has played with the focus of her camera. There is a passing car with their lights on, the time the picture seems to have been taken is just as it was about to get dark. This gives us an idea of coldness in its self. When car lights appear like this it is often raining also giving us an of bad weather.

JITKA HANZLOVA...

In the images Hazlova has focused on the trunks of the trees, unlike Barth focusing on the actual branches. In three of them snow is existent which really coincides with the season winter. The one on the bottom right has light shining through.

I got further inspiration from this website ...

I particularly like these images...

Kregon

Jody Miller

Gary McParland

SUSAN DERGES...

In these images of Susan Derges she uses isolated branches on water/ rivers to create a sense of delicacy. She uses photographic paper and the aid of moonlight and a flashgun to expose twigs and branches onto the paper. Looking at these images I may try taking images that involve water and reflection.
These images remind me of winter as there is no leaves, and the colours incuding our quite cold, the moonlight in the image adds to this effect.

WORDS

TEXTURE

I did a couple of images for this keyword, here are a couple of successful ones...

Both the teddy and the rug is textural but due to the depth of field in the image the bear is the most textural. I have used natural light from a nearby window to make the texture be more powerful.

This heart object has a grainy texture. I have focused towards the back of the coasters using a small depth of field. There is also some texture on the mat under the focused on object. The colours are also quite neutral in the image.

The natural light coming from a nearby window helps in this photo. If I were to take this concept forward I would have to add even more light and be closer to the object.

MY FAVOURITE IMAGE...

I really like this image as I think it shows the most texture, particulaly the green mould that runs along the edge of the bird bath. It is also quite grainy around this mould. I have used a small depth of field again which concentrates on this mould, I could try cropping the image to build more focus on this particular part.

Recently taken...

Like an above image with the teddy I wanted to capture the texture of rug. I have focused on the centre of the image, again using natural light to build this element even more in the composition.

This is a leaf I found on a step in my garden. We get n idea of crispiness especially towards the back of the leaf and at the edges. We can also see the lines within the leaf which adds more texture.

This is on top of shed. I have used a small depth of field which I think isn't ideal reflecting back on the image as it drops out most of the texture. I wanted to capture the grainy material and the fallen leaves that the shed had.

With a small depth of field I have focused on the bottom leaf. There is a certain crispy feel to the leaf. The background has been blurred to focus on this particular leaf.

The lines on the leaf are particular interesting in this image.

I think my texture images have been successful when using enough light, they were a lot more better if I was outside or near a window.

PATTERN

This was a heart shaped ornament with cream roses on it. I focused in on just the roses to form a pattern across the whole composition.

In this image the back row of pegs are in focus however the closer ones aren't. I like how the pair of peg rows go diagonally across the image.

MEMORY

In the following image I focused on the topic of the object not the components in the image. I have done numorous views of the same object...

In this image the pages that are blurred, were closing as I took the photograph however pg 185 is still therfore in focus.

This is my favourite image for memory. This was an autobiography, so the word memory is very fitting. Some of the words are in focus and some aren't due to the small depth of field. Line also plays a key part in the image. The words ' further down the road' on the page are in focus, this phrase kind of links with the idea of memory.

The photographed the bind of the book focusing on the words 'My Story', I used the flash to add extra light and make it more detailed.
The left side of the book is in darkness, whereas the right is quite light, but becomes less focused the further it is away from the camera.

On this image the words ' My story' are out of focus and is focused on the symbol and manufacturer. This takes it a bit away from being about memory. Both sides of the book are also out of focus, giving it preference to the middle.

In this image I rephotographed inside the book but this time took an image in portrait view. The line through the image diverts our eye towards the back of the page where it is blurred.

WATER

Here the orange light shines onto the window frame and creates a reflection of the drops and the diamond lines on the window.

The other night it had been raining very hard therefore there were water droplets on the window I was looking out of. The streetlights nearby to the window made the droplets illuminated.

The other day I took full advantage of the rain to get some more photos for the keyword water.

Here are the results...

f/3.1

This is a post that had water droplets on it. I have focused on the ball at the top of the post due to it being where the water droplets were.

I really love the delicacy of this petal, containing the water droplets from the rain.

This is another view of the same flower, it is a lot more open in this image

I have caught this scene as a water droplet is about to drop of the washing peg, I have used a relatively quick shutter speed. The background is blurred due to the focus I wanted on the main object.

f/3.1

Water from the rain has collected in the candles, which creates more of a gleam on the objects.
The way I have photographed the numourous candles it has formed a pattern style. It focuses on the centre of the photograph where the frame of the candles are.

I used the same aperture for these photographs, but changed the shutter speed so that the light was effecient for the photo.

GARGANTUAN
Having researched this work I read it as enormous. My way to photograph this is by making everyday objects seem a lot bigger than they actually art. A photographer who has done this is William Egglestone.

William Egglestone

In this image he has photograohed a tricycle in a road. He has photographed it low to the ground to get this certain perspective. It increases the objects importance. It gives us an insight into childhood.

For the feedback I was given I was told to get lower down so here is my other attempt...

MY ATTEMPT

In this photograoh I went to the floor to take the picture to make sure the watering can seem a lot bigger than it actually is. However I don' t think I went low enough to achieve the wanted perspective. So I will attempt this again in the near future to try and get a better outcome.
