ASSIGNMENT 2 COLOUR AND SEASON

OVERVIEW...

In this assignment I am requested to look closer and considercolour within your everyday enviroment. I will consider the signficance of colour and its ability to purvey meaning. We were split into 3 seasons, I was given winter.

When I consider the season winter I think of ...

Coldness
Frailty
Death
Christmas
The passage of time
Whites
Snow
Isolation

I think as a starting point I will consider the idea of death. In the natural landscape an example of something coming to its end or 'dying' is trees, leaves fall off leaving frail branches isolated. I will be focusing on this idea.

As it is autumn the leaves are starting to fall off but not fully isolated, so I will capture this to start with then hopefully capture fully isolated branches in the next few weeks.

RESEARCH...

To help me with starting this assignment I have found the following photographers that photograph a simalar concept.

UTA BARTH

Uta Barth has used photography to play around with depth of field and focus as we can see in one of the images.
She also does quite a few photographs of frail isolated branches, which I want to cosider for my landscape photographs.

In this image there is 3 images linked together in a sequence of empty branches. When I see these images I consider emptiness and the end of autumn beginning of winter.

In these images she has used numorous canvas' of tree branches, in the first image she has blocked out one canvas with the colour yellow this may be done to have created a sort of mood she wanted the viewer to have. In the second she has used yellow again but turned the branches the colour.

In this image Barth has played with the focus of her camera. There is a passing car with their lights on, the time the picture seems to have been taken is just as it was about to get dark. This gives us an idea of coldness in its self. When car lights appear like this it is often raining also giving us an of bad weather.

JITKA HANZLOVA...

In the images Hazlova has focused on the trunks of the trees, unlike Barth focusing on the actual branches. In three of them snow is existent which really coincides with the season winter. The one on the bottom right has light shining through.

I got further inspiration from this website ...

I particularly like these images...

Kregon

Jody Miller

Gary McParland

SUSAN DERGES...

In these images of Susan Derges she uses isolated branches on water/ rivers to create a sense of delicacy. She uses photographic paper and the aid of moonlight and a flashgun to expose twigs and branches onto the paper. Looking at these images I may try taking images that involve water and reflection.
These images remind me of winter as there is no leaves, and the colours incuding our quite cold, the moonlight in the image adds to this effect.
